   Josiah Ulysses S. Grant Conrad
1864 - 1944
Grandma Loeffler, Jess’ sister, wrote on the back of this “civilian” picture of Jess, above, “Sergeant at Arms.” The definition of Sergeant at Arms is: an officer of an organization (as a legislative body or court of law) who preserves order and executes commands. I believe this was a title he held as a member of a Lodge he may have belonged to and not a military rank.  Image8.jpg

Mary Anna and John were either very patriotic or had a subtle sense of humor because they named each of their sons after a President of the United States. Their first son was called Josiah Ulysses S. Grant Conrad, but was generally called Jess. He was born in Easton, PA about 1864.

Not much is said about Great Uncle Jess by either by Mom or Uncle George (the family historians). I don’t know anything about his youth. He looks to be about in his 50’s in these pictures which would date them about 1914, the year World War I began (July 28, 1914). Did he enlist? Was he drafted? Did he stay stateside or did he go overseas? He seems old to be in the service. Sorry, no answers - not from his Loeffler nephews who served in the same war and not from the Internet.
