At some point in time in Sweden, the practice of adding “son” or “dotter” to a child’s last name was dropped. This has caused me a lot of confusion. If the practice had been continued, Peter and Johanna’s three boys should have had the last name of Petersson and the three girls should have had the last name of Petersdotter (Peter’s last name was Andersson because his father’s first name was Anders.) This change was taking place during Grandma Lotten and Grandpa Sven’s generation. In Grandma Lotten’s family, the three girls kept the last name of Andersson perhaps because they knew their last names would change when they married (it must have been confusing to emigration/passport officials also, because on one of Grandma Lotten’s passports she signs her name as “Anna Charlotta Petersdotter Andersson” - which was doubly confusing because she was litterally Peter’s dotter and also her mother’s maiden last name was Petersdotter.) The three boys, however, chose different last names. Gustav Emil chose the last name of Magnusson and I can understand the reason for that: His father’s middle name was Magnus and his wife Edla’s maiden name was Magnusson. But why Karl and Arvid chose the last name of Dahlstrom is a mystery to me.
